Fullers GreatSights receives Qualmark Enviro-Gold Award
Tourism operator, Fullers GreatSights has received a Qualmark Enviro-Gold Award in
recognition of its high standards in environmental practices.
Qualmark, New Zealand's trusted guide to quality travel experiences, certifies tourism
operators in New Zealand. As part of its Enviro scheme Qualmark assesses the energy
efficiency, water conservation, waste management, conservation and community initiatives
of tourism operators in New Zealand.
Charles Parker, General Manager Bay of Islands at InterCity Group (NZ) Ltd is delighted with
the award.
“The Bay of Islands has an extraordinary natural beauty – it’s why many locals choose to
live here and why so many tourists visit the region. We love the area and are committed to
doing our part to protect our environment as best we can.”
Fullers GreatSights has an internal sustainability programme run by the ‘Green Team’ and
its external environmental efforts extend to cultural, community, sporting, educational and
business initiatives.
“We’re involved in things like Project Island Song which is a community initiative,
returning native birds to seven key islands in the Bay of Islands. Fullers GreatSights plays a
sponsorship role in numerous festivals and events including the Kerikeri half marathon, the
Russell to Paihia ocean swim and the new northern crossing event.
“From a practical point of view we have energy and water efficiency programmes which
have both environmental and commercial benefits. We have reduced our paper waste
significantly through recycling and we source our products locally wherever possible. In our
experience, even little steps can make a big difference over time.”
“We know that sustainable practices require continuous improvement so we are always
on the look out for ways we can boost efficiencies that benefit the environment, the local
community and our operations,” says Mr Parker.
Paula McCallum, Qualmark General Manager, says only top performers are recognised with
awards. “Enviro Awards go to businesses showing a high degree of commitment to caring
for the environment and their community,” says Mrs McCallum.
Qualmark is jointly owned by Tourism New Zealand and the New Zealand Automobile
Association. The programme is run as an industry service, on a not-for-profit basis.
